Notes for EDWARD SHEATHER:
Edward sheather was born in
Battle, County of East Sussex, England on the 27th July, 1824.
He
was the son of James
Sheather and Mary Milham, who left England on the "Royal George"
with
their ten children as well
as James Sheather's brother, Henry, his wife and their eight
children.
Twenty two Sheathers in
all.
They were bounty immigrants
imported by the Macarthurs to work as farm labourers at Camden
Park Estate with William
and Mary Fuller and Mary's sister Elizabeth DAvis, her husband
and
children.
Edward and Eliza both
worked for the Macarthurs at Camden, he was a sheperd and she was
a
housemaid. They married on
the 12 August, 1845 at Narrellan near CAmden and moved to
Nangus in the early
1860's.,where Edward selected land which he later sold to James Robinson,
a citizen of Gundagai and
subsequently the owner of Kimo. Edward and Eliza then built the
Nangus Hotel (Abington) at Native
Dog Creek in 1877, While the pub was in opertion Edward
farmed and
had a
dairy on the share system with Mr Collins.
Addie Daley (sheather) claimed
that Edward himself , built the pub ,
also Mr Jack Sheather says the same. Jack could show you
where the bricks were made for the
Pub. His grandfather took over the farming operation after Edward
died.
The bushrangers , according
to the late Mrs Addie Daley, were at the hotel for 3 days, staying
in the old cellar, and were
kind to Eliza, on the 4th day it is recorded in history, where they
killed
people at
Wantabadgery. but ceased to operate
as a hotel in 1924.
Edward Sheather died 16th
November, 1902, age 78 years. He left behind 7 children, 51
grandchildrenand 48 great
grandchildren. In his later years he was compelled to use a
walking
cane, but otherwise held
all his facalities. It was said he was far seeing, honest and kindly
man.
Eliza Sheather died 1
February, 1908, age 81 years. She was said to be a remarkable women for
her age even though afflicted
by blindness and deafness.

Obituary
The Late Mr Edward
Sheather.
Touching the death of Mr
Edward Sheather of Nangus, a correspondent at Nangus writes. "
Mr
Sheather was born at Rye,
Sussex, England on 22ndJuly 1824 and came to Australia in 1839 in
the "Royal George". He settled
at Camden and entered the employ of Mr Macarthur. Leaving there he
came to
Gundagai and was farming on the halves system and was also dairying with Mr
Collins of "Kima"
(or "Kimo") station. He married Eliza Fuller at Camden on the 12thAugust 1845.
There are by the marriage 3 daughters and 4 sons, 51
grandchildren and 48 great grandchildren. Mr Sheather selected on Native
dog creek 35 years ago last August and farmed there on his own
account
most of that time, till failing health overtook him. His youngest son John then
took command of the farming operations. Mr Sheather opened his
hotel at Nangus 25 years ago last October and resided there
ever since. Of late years he was compelled to use a stick in his tottering
old age
but otherwise held all his faculties. He was far seeing, honest and a kindly man
and of him may be safely said "His left hand never knew what his
right hand did." It may truly be said that Mrs Sheather is a
remarkable woman at her age of 76 years. Much sympathy is felt for her in her
double
affliction of blindness and deafness.

Notes for Eliza Ann
Sheather:
The Gundagai Times
Friday, August 6 1920
After being an occupant of
the Nangus Hotel for nearly half a century Miss Eliza
Sheather has migrated to
another home, having given up possession to Mr. Bert
Lenon, of Ganmain, who is the new
proprietor. This hotel was built and conducted by
Miss Sheather's father, and since
his death she has carried on the management of it.
Naturally
she will
feel like a fish out of water for a time, as leading a free life to a
business one is a
big
change, but she has earnt a spell and no one will begrudge it to
her. Miss Sheather
will be
missed from the hotel by callers who have always been
accustomed to see her
during
its long existence, She can now enjoy life visiting the
friends she has seen grow
up into
manhood and womanhood during the half century she has lived at
Nangus.
