Notes for RICHARD SHEATHER:

31st January 1902

Mr. Richard Sheather, who had been ailing for the past few months, joined the silent majority on

Tuesday. His remains were interred in the Woodburn cemetery on Wednesday. At noon work in

the quarry was suspended, and all who could possibly get away joined the mournful procession

to the grave.

The steamer "Magnet" was secured and conveyed a large number of mourners while several

rode or drove. It was truly a sorrowing sight to view the funeral cortege passing through the

township to the wharf. A last glimpse at the coffin, and one could say unto himself, "A good

and true man has gone to his long rest." For the family sympathy is felt on all hands. The

deceased, through sheer hard work and untiring energy, forced his way through the world, but

hard luck overtakes all of us at one time or another.

The deceased had a big heart, and after a reverse would make another effort and come to the

front. Men of that stamp have made the country what it is at the present time, viz, prosperous.

Referring to the time when the deceased owned the steamer "Magnet," many and many a "hard

up" had cause for remembering him. One had but to say "I am broke" and the reply, in hearty

tones, was, "Jump on board, old man - it's all right."
