Mrs Emma Shoesmith

The death occurred in Brisbane on June 12 of Mrs Emma Shoesmith, at the age of 91

years.  Deceased was a native of the Hunter River district, having been born on

November 21 1846, being a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Sheather.  She was married

to Mr Humphrey Shoesmith 69 years ago.  He died seven years ago.  They lived at

various places on the Manning River, and for the few years prior to 1935 she lived in

Cornwall Street Taree.  Then she went to live with a son at Grafton, and afterwards

took up residence in Brisbane, where she remained till the end came.  She is survived by

two daughters and three sons: Mrs Alice Walters, West Australia; Mrs Rose Sturge,

Sydney; Mr Alfred Shoesmith, Grafton; and Messrs John and Humphrey, Sydney. 

One daughter (Mrs Harriett Tisdell) is dead, as also are Messrs William and James

Tisdell (sic) Taree. Humphrey: At Wesleyan Chapel, Jones Island, 6.10.1863, Humphrey John

Shoesmith, farmer, Cundle Plains, married Emma Matilda Sheather, born 1847, residing

Notes for Cecil Manning Shoesmith:

Cecil enlisted with the A.I.F. on the 4th January 1916 at West Maitland, New South

Wales (with this brother Sidney). He is described as 5ft 11 1/2in. 157lbs with a Fair complexion, Blue eyes and

Fair hair. Cecil saw service in France where he was wounded (gun shot wound right arm

in action in the field on the 7th June 1917 and admitted to the 2nd Australian Casualty

Clearing Station and then to the 56th General Hospital. He rejoined his Unit on the 6th

July 1917 and was admitted to 22nd General Hospital with Trench Fever and

transferred to England and admitted to the Manor Court Hospital, Folkestone.  Cecil

rejoined his Battalion in France on the on the 26th December 1917. Cecil was wounded

((gun shot wound left wrist) in action in the field for the 2nd time on the 31st March

1918. He was again transferred back to England and admitted to the Kitchener War

Hospital, Brighton, Sussex. Cecil returned to Australia on the 16th August 1918 and

was discharged from service on the 6th November 1918

Notes for Sidney Victor Shoesmith

Sidney enlisted with the A.I.F. on the 4th January 1916 at West Maitland, New South

Wales (with his brother Cecil). He is described as 5ft 10 3/4in. 152lbs with a Fair

complexion, Blue eyes and Light Brown hair. Sidney saw service in France where he

was wounded (gun shot wound right shoulder) in action in the field on the 24th

February 1917 and transferred to the 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station. Sidney

rejoined his Battalion on the 13th June 1917 and was wounded (gun shot wound right

hand) in action in the field for the 2nd time on the 12th October 1917. He was

transferred to the 12th Australian Casualty Clearing Station. Sidney again rejoined his

Battalion on the 3rd December 1917. He was granted leave to the UK 21st January

1918 to 6th February 1918 when he again rejoined his Battalion in France. Sidney

returned to Australia on the 28th June 1919 and was discharged from service on the

12th August 1919.
