Benjamin died on board the Royal Admiral on its voyage from England to New South Wales

from 5 May to 16 July 1800. Benjamin was a convict on board and died of a fever. The Royal

Admiral sailed with 300 convicts, 11 missionaries and two French prisoners from the Napoleonic

wars. It also carried Gaol Fever and 43 of her prisoners died on the voyage. Benjamin Cook died

on a Thursday 4pm 6 Jun 1800. His body and bedding were consigned to the deep. Ann his wife

was also on the Royal Admiral, when the ship arrived in Australia Ann, now a widow was left

with a new born baby (William) to raise on her own.

Taken from the log book: Royal admiral, convict ship (Capt J Wilson) Serious outbreak of fever

on voyage from Portsmouth to Rio Janeiro, 1800 (laweis Papers) (ML Ref: ML MSS 4190 X/CY

"Benjm Cook a convict died of the Fever. he had a wife and child on board. some of the Brethren

informed her of his Death, on hearing this she was much affected and cried earnestly to the Lord

to have mercy on his soul. She was informed that prayer now was of no avail on his behalf as

his state was irrocoverably fixed according to the unerring testimony of God's word "Where the

Tree falleth, there shall it be" exhorted her to put her trust in the Lord as he said "Leave thy

Fatherless children and I will preserve them alive; and let thy widow's trust in me..." His body

was committed to the deep. T Elder read part of the burial Service."

From James wiltshire's Journal which he kept on board the Royal Admiral from England to New

South Wales 5 May - 16 July 1800. (ML Ref: ML MSS 1296) Page 7 June 5th

"Slight breeze and cloudy weather. Departed this life Benjm Cook, a convict, with a Fever

committed his Body to the Deep as before. The fumigating being continued as before and

strongly apployd as a very great effect in abating the fever to the joy and pleasure of everyone

on board." L45.13 Dist 80 K.

Notes for ANN POULDEN:

Note: Ann Poulden arrived in Australia as a FREE Passenger aboard the ship "Lady Juliana",

which has been described as a "floating brothel". She must have been sent out to be with her

father as she was only 16 years old, and he was here as a member of the Royal Navy Marines.

Ann possibly returned with her father to England when he went back in 1792 and in 1794 she

married a fellow named Bellchambers when she was 20 years old. It is not known whether

Bellchambers was ever in Australia, but he apparently died young, for in 1798 she married

Benjamin Cook. Benjamin Cook and Ann decided to come to australia on the Royal Admiral in

1800. Ann was pregnant and after Benjamin Cook died during the voyage, she gave birth to

their son, William Cook, while the vessel was still at sea 26 Nov 1800. On board this vessel

wasAntoine L'Andre, a Frenchman, who had been captured and was a prisoner of war.

He was sent to Australia as he said that he knew how to make wine. Ann married Antoine in

1801 in Sydney andthey had four children. Antoine died from a centipede bite and Ann and

then married John Harris,a landowner, in 183 at the age of 39 years. They had two children. Prior

to her death Ann wentcompletely deaf. A gutsy pioneer, she is buried in Christ Church

Cemetery Castlereagh in thesame grave as her grnaddaughter Ann Jane Harris. The inscription

reads "Sacred to the memoryof Ann Harris who departed this life February 5th 1835 aged 61

years.' "No further seek her meritsto disclose, or drain her frailties from their dreaded abode,

there they alike in trembling hoperepose, The bosom of her Father and her God."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To my knowledge the Poulden, Bellchamber part has not been substantiated by any documents

also the Benjamin Cook convict (1800) being the drum major of the first fleet (1788) is also tied in

with family folk lore but no one can really prove it.  The source for the Poulden, Bellchamber

part came from an article written by Peter G Christian  - "The Lander's Vine" published in "Timespan"

June, 1985 -but he can't say where he originally got the information.  While I think it is a great

"story" and I've included it in my family history I have had to put it under "Family Folk Lore"

until some further evidence is found.

Ann herself said in the 1828 census that she came out on the Lady Juliana as a free settler but

there is no record of what her name was.

2.                i.    WILLIAM2 COOK, b. 05 Jun 1800, AT SEA onboard "Royal Admiral"; d. 19 Nov 1874, West Kempsey, New South Wales.

Generation No. 2

2.  WILLIAM2 COOK (BENJAMIN1) (Source: Anne McColl) was born 05 Jun 1800 in AT SEA

onboard "Royal Admiral", and died 19 Nov 1874 in West Kempsey, New South Wales.

He married (1) HARRIETT HUBBARD (Source: Anne McColl) 22 Nov 1821 in St Philip's Church of

England, Sydney, New South Wales, daughter of WILLIAM HUBBARD and MARY GOULDING.

She was born 29 Oct 1802 in Parramatta, Sydney, New South Wales, and died 1853 in New South Wales.

He married (2) Ann Kearns 18 October 1853 in St. Lawrence's Church of England, Sydney, New

South Wales (Source: Lynn Lliffe - GR 2007.), daughter of Joseph Kearns and Elizabeth Ready.

She was born 1822 in Sydney, New South Wales, and died 22 July 1877 in Macleay River, New

South Wales.

Notes for WILLIAM COOK:

William Cook married 1 Harriet Hubbard - her last child was William born Castlereagh 30 Nov 1836

(638 No 20),

Harriet disappeared from the records - William Cook snr  turns up next in Kempsey with his

children (one of whom was my great grandmother) and begins having children by Anne Kearns

( the daughter of a neighbour of William Cook's father in law William Hubbard) but they did not

marry until 1853.  My records say 10 children before they married and 6 after.  The first one I

have is Joseph born c 1840 when Anne is about 17 (accepted age for marriage was 16) , I have a

death certificate for him which states his mother was Ann Kearns not Harriet Hubbard.  One of

the problems has always been that when William Cook died in Kempsey the death cert was filled

out by his son in law George Avery (Rachel's husband) who stated that William had 22 children

and that his wife was Harriet Hubbard - no mention of his wife's mother Ann Kearns!

I know when different members of the families first started researching William's children it came

together very slowly because there are no records in the NSW bdms.  Most of the information

for children of Harriet and William came from birthday books and bibles.  Ann came from the

Pioneer Register; Mary Ann from family bible, Benjamin 1828 census, Sarah a daughter's

birthday book  Susan bible, Hariet marriage certificate, William bdms.  Joseph was  born March,

1840 (source Nan Smith desc)  (too early for church - roving minister but he did not visit until

much later);  Elizabeth Ann 20.10.1841; Ann 12.5.1844 Summer Island, McLeay River (mc);

Rachel 26.12.1854 Yarra Bankini, Macleay River (bc).
