Notes for James
Landers:
Extract from THE LANDERS
VINE by Peter Christian
James was born on 4 Jul
1896 and married Ann Keiling (also known as Hadley, Adley or
Keenan) on 6 August 1827 at
Christ
Church, Castlereagh, by Rev
Henry fulton. the witnesswere
James' brother Samuel and sisiter
Mary. there is some doubt as to the idetity of the father of
Ann keiling;
it has
been assumed that it was Charles Hadley, but this is not yet
proved.
James Landers was the
licensee of The Oddfellows Arms at Castlereagh and in about 1845 he
opened an inn at South
Creek by the same name. This inn later became the Commercial Hotel
after James had sold it and taken
up farming at Lambridge, near Castlereagh. He died there on 25
October 1884 and is
interred in the family grave at St Pauls, Emu Plains
Cemetery.
James and Ann had 11
children, and the following are pocket sketches of
them.
William, born 11 Aug 1831
was also an innkeeper. He married Annie Elizabeth Henrietta Hadley
at Christ church, Castlereach
on 10 March 1856. Annie's sister Sarah was the second wife of
James Tobias Ryan, and both were
great granddaughters of William Tunks, a marine, of the First
fleet and Sarah Lyons, a convict
of the Second fleet. William and Annie Landers lived in the
Penrith/Castlereach
district for most of their lives. The Nepean Times of July 1890 printed an
obtiuary for William, which
stated that "He was looked up as one of our best residents". Of their
children Edwin Charles
Hadley Landers married Alice Annie Freestone. William James Landers,
a Railway employee in the
Penrith district, married Sarah Jane Robertson, and after her death
Mrs Nora Welch. A daughter of
William and Annie married Thomas Hobby in 1879 whilst their
fourth son, Harold, was a Sargeant
of Police in the Parramatter district. another son, Percy
Landers,
married
Amy Ethelene Fraser, a granddaughter fo the Rev Henry
Fulton.
Other children of James and
Ann Keiling were George Napoleon, who married Betsy Whiley in
1864; Lucy married Robert
Forster and Albert Ney Landers married angie
O'Donnell.
It is interesting to note
that a number of second generation Landers had a second christian
name which proclaimed their
French ancestry. James named four of his children thus: George
Napoleon,
Henry
Phillipe, Albert ney, and Edwin Canrobert; but possibly to appease some, he
named another
of his
children Samuel Blucher! No doubt after the Prussion General, who with
Wellington,
defeated Napoleon at Waterloo. Another "Napoleon" can be found among
the
children of Mary
Stephenson (nee Landers)>
"The Nepean Valley, its History, its Floods, Its
People" produced the following:
John Harris of shanes Park
South Creek and his brave men rescued many by boat..Mr william
Landers, a farmer, living
about nine miles down the river had lost all that was on his far at the
time of the flood. Page 49 says
the The Castlereagh township could not be reached at all.
Barlows and
Landers
farms formed the extreme points and from one to the other is 9 miles. It is
impossible to
get
below landers."
