Notes for Arthur Drury and
Davida Young:
The Manning River
Times 21st May 1921 SALVATION ARMY MARRIAGE DRURY- YOUNG There was
a large gathering in the Salvation Army Hall, Taree, on Tuesday night of
last week, to witness the
marriage ceremony between Band Secretary A. V. Drury
(Son of Councillor C. E. and Mrs.
Drury, of Glenthorne) and Sister Veda Young,
daughter of
Mrs. I
Young, of Albert Street, Taree. The contracting parties
walked up the isle as the band played and the soldiers sang the
well-known hymn, "He's the
Lily of the Valley," and took their places before the
platform. The band then
played the march, "Under the Colours," after which the C. O.
offered prayer. The Articles
of Marriage were read, after which those present sang the
23rd Psalm. The couple took
up a position on a small specially arranged platform,
under the Army colors.
Captain Ford performed the ceremony, and when they were
pronounced man and wife the
S.M. pulled a cord and a shower of confetti enveloped
them, from a specially
arranged bell which had been suspended overhead. The party
then left the hall, the
congregation singing lustily "Some Day I'll see His Blessed
Face." The bride, who is the only daughter of Mrs. Young, was
dressed in a navy colored
uniform, with a silk sash
suspended from the right shoulder across the left side, being
caught up with sprays of
orange blossoms. The bridesmaid was Cadet Lucy Hopper, who was also
dressed in a navy uniform,
with white
sash. The bridegroom wore a bandsman's uniform. Mr. Ray Drury
was groomsman to his
brother, and Mr. Wilfred
Young gave his sister away. Breakfast was served at the residence of the bride's
mother, when about 35 guests
were seated. Captain Ford
presided, and speeches embodying good wishes for the
newly- married couple, were
delivered by Cr. C. E. Drury, Mr. Wilfred Young, Mr S.
T. Lean, Mrs. R. J. Hooper, and Miss
Clarice Drury. The presents were numerous and useful, and included many
cheques. Mr. and Mrs. Drury left by the midnight train en route to Jenolan
Caves. Their future home will be at Glenthorne. ... transcribed from a
