Notes for Josephine
Cuthbert:
A bit about my line. My gt-gt-grandfather Thomas Cuthbert,
b.1786, married
Maria West & they had my
gt-grandfather, Joseph Cuthbert, b.1809.
He
married (1) Theresa Mitten,
and (2) Edith Goldsmith (nee Stace).
Joseph and
Edith were married at
Hastings. She already had a son called Horace
Goldsmith, presumably the
Bessie Goldsmith you have as a granddaught
the 1881 census is Horace's
daughter. Joseph and Edith had a
son, Joseph,
in 1857, who was my
grandfather. In 1878 he married the
vicar of Hooe's
daughter, Mary Rhoda Maning
(1854-1920). The marriage was not
approved of
by the Manings, and they
married in Worcester, where Joseph was working as a
hop factor. They returned to Sussex and had 3
children, Joseph, who
emigrated to
Canada, Noel, who when he was 20
months old and his parents
were out, fell from his
nurse's lap into the fire and was burned to death,
in 1886. My grandmother was pregnant with my
father, Harold (1886-1957) at
the
time.
