Sketch of the Life of Jesse Gardiner, Springville. Oct. 31, 1900Sketch of the life of Jesse Gardiner

Jesse Gardiner was born Oct 20th 1829 at Burnsgreen  near Chalford, Gloucestershire England,

son of Charles and Maria Jefferies Gardiner, third child in the faimly .  in 1835 or 36 the faimily  all

moved from Gloucestershire to Shrewsbury in shropshire about 100 miles.  being very young I

never knew many of my relations in Gloucestershire.  I grew up at Shrewsbury, and there went to

work at 9 years old.  The work so ordered I could get 3 hours of school each day, till I was 13

years old and then I worked full time, 12 hours a day.  The school was [a] very Common one only

teaching the four common rules of Education, my mother then sent me to night school as best

she could pay for me to still make me more perfect in these rules, this in winter time.  I also went to

sunday school in church of England for 6 or 7 years, and was much respected in that school, and

became one of their teachers.  teaching the Testament and Bibble , I received many presents for

so doing; I was now about 18 years old.  in 1847 a man name  Thomas from Liverpool, an Elder of

this church, came & preached in the streets of Shrewsbury (he was a native Elder).  much being

said by the public, I went to hear him (as also my folks).  I was well versed in the Bibble .  I told

my follks this man preached the truth, if Bibble was true.  I soon could see with new eyes, the

glorious rays of light that bursted to my view such as I never knew nor could not comprehend in

the sunday school.  in a short time all manner of things was said about this Elder.  I continued to

go and heer  him very much to the anoyance  of my folks. I well remember these times. I still

continued in the Sunday school. till the 15th day of July 1848. I then went and was Baptised by

this same Elder, and oh then I had to face a frowning world,   and nothing but bitter persecution

was my lot at home, and all my friends became enemies. I was ye.

Notes for Florence Edith Mcbride:

Personal History of Florence Edith McBride Gardiner, FLORENCE EDITH MCBRIDE

GARDINER March 1982                I was born on April 15, 1903 in Sublet, Cassia County, Idaho, the

third daughter of eight children born to my parents, George Owen McBride and Agnes Elizabeth

Marston.  A midwife helped my mother through my difficult birth in our home in Sublet.  My

mother didnt have good health and was very sickly before I was born.  My mother was going to

name each of my older sisters Florence, but I finally got the name.  I guess it was meant for me.    I

didnt get off to a very good start.  My sister tells me how I used to cry all the time and how they

would have to rock me constantly.  Lillian even took me out and dumped me in the canal, buggy

and all.  She was only three or four years old and Leona was just one year older than Lillian.  I

think my mother fed me whole cows milk and my body couldnt handle it very well.  Perhaps I had

colic or even rickets.   I have three sisters: Leona McBride born March 17, 1899 at the home of

Henry Marston in Layton, Davis County, Utah, Lillie May (Lillian) born August 20, 1900 in

Kelton, Box Elder, County, Utah at the home of my grandmother Lucy Lovisa Higley McBride

Baker, and Mable Agnes born December 16 1904 in Sublet, Cassis County, Idaho.    My father

herded sheep before he got the ranch in Sublet, on which he had cattle, pigs and an orchard of

apple and plum trees.  He also raised alfalfa on his ranch.  It must have been a profitable business

venture, because when he sold out in 1906 and moved to Ogden, Utah, he had $10,000 in cash,

which was quite a sum of money at that time.  We left Sublet when I was three, because it was too

hard to take my sisters six miles to school in a horse and buggy in Malta, Idaho.  Leona was

seven and Lillian was six years old at that time.     It was 1906 when my family moved to Ogden,

Utah where my dad began selling new and used furniture.  We bought Alvords Second Hand

Store on Grant Ave. Between 24th and 25th street and later rented a building at 23rd a.
