Notes for Jane
Gill:
Jane, along with her
parents, William and Susanna, came to NSW on the horrendous ship the
Maitland in 1838. The
Maitland was converted to barque rigging for its one voyage to
Australia
with emigrants in 1838. As
an old Blackwall Frigate, built at Blackwall Shipyard in Calcutta in
1810, it measured 125 feet in
length and weighed 648 tons.
The charter organisers
crammed 205 adults, 111 children and some livestock on
board.
Most passengers were
assisted to emigrate from England by their parishes, who paid 5
pounds
in
sponsorship.
Most of the emigrants came
from south-east England,
notably Kent and East Sussex.
Crowded and unhygenic
conditions, thyphus and scarlet fever resulted in a high mortality rate
on
board.Maitland left Gravesend,
England, on June 24, 1838 and
arrived Sydney,
Australia, on
November 6,
1838.
Jane and William Lee had 13
children. Both were closely associated with the Salvation Army at
Port Macquarie. After
Willliams's death, Jane moved back to the Manning River, and stayed
there until her death in
1899.
Jane was also associated
with the Salvation Army at Taree, where she was greatly loved and
known to all as Sister
Granny Lee.
William and Jan's son
Samuel and two of his brothers were also committed
Salvationists.

Notes
for Samuel Lee:
Northern Champion 23rd October 1940 OBITUARY MR. S. H.
LEE The many friends of Mr. Samuel Henry Lee, of the Chatham
subdivision, Taree,
heard with deep regret if his
sudden death on Saturday night. For the past two years
Mr. Lee had suffered with heart trouble, had during the past year
he had been living
quietly with his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Preston Lee, of
the local
nursery. On Saturday afternoon Mr. and Mrs. Lee came to Taree to
attend the
Salvation Army anniversary tea, and on leaving, Mr. Lee, senior,
expressed his
intention
of remaining at home. However, later in the evening he decided to walk to
town to attend the evening function in the Salvation Army hall, but when near the
Plume oil depot he apparently had a severe heart attack and collapsed on the road
way. A couple of young men foun him there about 7 p.m., and thinking he was a man
under the influence of drink, they lifted him to the side of
the road. Mr. and Mrs. Lee
returned home about 9.30 p.m. at about 11 p.m. they received a great shock when
Constable
Barrett called and informed them that Mr. Lee, senior, had passed away on
the
roadway. Up till that time they believed him to be in bed.
The late
Mr. Lee was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Lee. He was born at
Holey Flat, near Moorland, 57 years ago, but when he was a
child his parents
Haytown, on the Hastings river. At the age of 14 years he commenced
working in the
Haytown
sawmill,
and later moved to the Newtown sawmill near Port Macquarie.
Leaving sawmill work he went on to farm at Ennis for two years,
and then some 21
years ago, he came across to the Manning. First of all he spent
seven years farming
on Oxley Island, followed by four years at Cundle and seven at Hannam
Vale. About
three years ago he came to Taree. He first spent a year on the Taree Estate
farm of
Mr.
C. M. Ford and since then he has been living quietly with his son. The
late Mr.
Lee was a man of exceptionally fine character, and one who could not fail
to win the
esteem and respect of all who met him. His life was lived in harmony with the
highest
ideals and in all his associations with his fellows he exerted a great
influence for good.
Whilst at Hannam Vale, he served as a local preacher in the Lower Manning
Circuit of
the Methodist Church, where his earnest manner and good example earned
him a
cordial welcome at the various preaching places. He rendered aid to the Hannam
Vale
flower show, on which he served as a committeeman, and when living on the Hastings
he
was well known as a cricketer and tennis player.
He was married at Haytown 36
years ago to Miss Minnie Elizabeth Branch, daughter
of the late Mr. and Mrs.
Charles Branch, of Port Macquarie. His wife passed away Hannam
Vale five years
ago.
The children are Mr. Preston Lee and Mr. Raymond Lionel Lee
(both of Taree),
Mr. Reginald Keith Lee (Hannam Vale), Mesdames Harold Sheather
(Taree Estate),
Charles Bone (Hannam Vale), Robert Bignall (Hannam Vale), and Ernest
Hawley
(Taree).
Brothers and sisters are Messrs. Wm. Lee (Hannam Vale), Charles Lee
(Kendall), Bert Lee (Rawdon
Island), Geo. Lee (Wauchope), Mesdames Martin
Ruprecht (Victoria Street,
Taree), Tom Westley (Port Macquaire), - Spindler (South
Coast), and another sister in Melbourne. At 1.30 p.m. on Monday a
service was conducted at the Taree Methodist Church,
after which the cortege proceeded to the Dawson cemetery, where
the remains were
laid
to rest
beside those of his late wife. Re. E. W. Hyde conducted the services at the
church and graveside, and paid a warm tribute to the Christian
character of the late
Mr.
Lee.
The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. W. T. Howard.
