OBITUARY
DEATH OF MR.
J. GILL
On
Friday afternoon last there passed away at Laurieton a very old and highly
respected
resident
of the Camden Haven in the person of
Mr. James Gill, at the grand old age of 80 years.
The late Mr.
Gill was in his usual good health
until some 11 days previous to his death when he
was taken
suddenly ill, and all the power of
the medical profession was of no avail and the old
gentleman
passed over to the great majority.
The cause of death being pneumonia and
complications.
The deceased
was born on the Paterson River in 1844, where he spent most of his young days,
finally he
removed to the Manning River, where he carried on various bush
worker associations.
When only 22
years of age he was married to Miss Sarah Jane Eggins at Jones Island. The issue
of the
marriage was four sons and six daughters. The family are scattered over
different parts of
the State,
being Alfred Charles (Lorne), Mrs. W. McIntyre (Sydney), Mrs. C. Arnott
(Laurieton), Mrs. R.
Henson (Sydney), William James (Laurieton), Herbert H. (Laurieton), Mrs. T
Tisdell
(Upper
Lansdowne), Mrs. T. Flanigan (Bellingen), Albert E (Laurieton) and
Mrs. A. S.
Redman
(Taree).
The late Mr.
Gill removed from the Manning River to Camden Haven to assist in
building the old
sawmill at
Laurieton for Messrs. Laurie Bros., over half a century ago, and he was one of
the
first
to get the rough timber in the bush
for the mill building. He worked with Messrs. Laurie
Bros till
they leased their mill, then he
removed to the Hastings River and was engaged in log
hauling for a
time, until misfortune crossed his
pathway and his team was burnt and crippled in
a summer
fire, the team having got tangled up
amongst timber and thus were either burnt or
were
crippled. The deceased then sought
work in Messrs. Hibbard and Hain’s sawmill. After a
stay of five
years on the Hastings River he returned to Laurieton and was
engaged by Mr.
Joseph
Laurie, who had taken over the mill
and was afterwards employed by Messrs. Bibby and
MacKay as
sawyer. When the dairying industry
was commenced on the upper part of the
Camden….. land and engaged in farming, which he successfully carried for 81
years. About four
years ago he
relinquished farming pursuits and
removed to Laurieton to spend the rest of his
life in rest
and quietude.
The deceased
leaves a widow and large grown up family, whom with 64 grandchildren and 25
great-grandchildren remained to mourn the loss of a good husband and
loving father.
The funeral
cortege arrived at Kendall on Sunday about 1 p.m. and a large concourse of
residents
of all parts of the district followed
the remains to their last resting place in the
Methodist
portion of the Kendall cemetery. The Rev. C. A. Lane conducting the last sad
rites.

OBITUARY
ALFRED
CHARLES GILL
A
link with the early history of Camden Haven was severed with the passing of Mr.
Alfred
Charles
Gill, of Kendall, who died in the
Hastings
District Hospital, Port Macquarie, on the
15th
November
last, at the grand age of 89 years.
Deceased, who
was born at Patterson on the Hunter Valley, came to Laurieton with his
parents,
the late Mr.
and Mrs. James Gill, over seventy years ago, where at the age of fifteen he
began
employment
alongside his father in the sawmill belonging in those days to Messrs. McKay
&
Bibby, on the
banks of the Camden Haven River. During this period the sailing boats used to
arrive from
Sydney, dump
their ballast along the foreshores, and load timber for transporting
back
to the capital. Shortly after this
the Gill family decided to move up river and finally took up
farming
on the property still held by their
grandson, Mr. Jim Gill at Lorne. There were eleven
children of
the James Gill family, five of whom
are still living, namely Mrs. Arnott (Laurieton),
Mrs. S.
Redman (Taree), Mr. Albert Gill
(Comboyne), Mrs. Flanagan (Terronarra, Qld.), and Mrs.
Hansen
(Sydney).
Mr. Alfred
Charles Gill eventually took over the farm from his father and he married
Miss
Jane
Towers of Coopernook. There were nine
children of the union” Stanley (Lorne), Linda (Mrs.
Gyler,
Kendall), Dell (Mrs. O’Donnell,
Kendall), Clarence (Stewart’s River), James and Laurie
(Lorne),
Rozalie (Mrs. Crossingham, Stewart’s
River), and Miss Vera Gill, of Kendall. A ninth
child,
Kenneth, predeceased him at the age
of six years.
Deceased was
well known and highly esteemed throughout the Camden Haven district, where
he
was known for his neighbourly deeds.
