                                 Noets for James Gill:

                                 James enlisted with the A.I.F. on the 12th August 1915 at West Maitland, New South

                                 Wales. He is described as 5ft 6 3/4in. 138lbs with a Dark complexion, Brown eyes and

                                 Brown hair. He saw service in Egypt and France where he was wounded (gun shot

                                 wound left thigh) in action in the field on the 5th November 1916. He was transferred

                                 to England and admitted to the 1st Aux. Hospital, Harefield and the Boscombe

                                 Military Hospital. James was promoted to Lance Corporal on the 27th October 1916,

                                 to Corporal on the 14th August 1917and to Sergeant on the 19th July 1918. He

                                 rejoined his unit in the field, France, on the 27th November 1917. In January 1918 he

                                 was granted leave in Paris.
James was awarded the Military Medal "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to

                                 duty as a patrol leader on the morning of the 4th May, 1918, east of METEREN during

                                 and attack on an enemy post. When advancing along the hedge towards the post the

                                 party came under direct machine gun fire. After some bombs thrown by his platoon

                                 commander failed to dislodge the enemy. Cpl. GILL with a fresh supply of bombs by

                                 using the hedge, led him men on within bombing range of the post when a bombing fight

                                 took place with the result that the machine gun was withdrawn by the enemy enabling

                                 the post to be rushed and occupied by the remainder of the party. He displayed great

                                 courage, coolness and dash in a situation in which the enemy had him at great

                                 disadvantage and his action was mainly responsible for the success of this minor

                                 operation." 
On the 1st July 1918 he attended the Aust. Corps School (in the field).
James was wounded (gun shot wound back)  in action for the 2nd time on the 10th

                                 August 1918 and died of his wounds on the 14th August 1918.
James's father, henry received (signed for on the 4th March 1919) his personal effects

                                 with included: 2 Devotional books, Torch (damaged) and Book of Views, I Wallet, 1

                                 Notebook, I Pipe, Photos and Cards
Henry then took receipt of his sons Military Medal on the 22nd April 1919.
