                                 Notes for Leslie Clouoten:

                                 Leslie enlisted with the A.I.F. on the 29th June 1916 at Newcastle, New South Wales.

                                 He is described as 5ft 4in. with a Fair complexion, Blue eyes and Brown hair.
Leslie saw service in France where he was wounded (gun shot wound abdomen) in

                                 action in the field on the 7th June 1917. He was transferred to England and admitted to

                                 the 3rd Aux. Hospital and then to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley on the 21st June

                                 1917. He rejoined his Battalion in France from wounded on the 18th December 1917.

                                 On the 5th April 1918 Leslie was wounded in action in the field for the 2nd time. He

                                 died the same day from his wounds.

"He was wounded at Villers-Brettonneux, I do not know what his wounds were. I saw

                                 him in dressing station, 5th or 6th April, then pretty bad. I never spoke to him. Padre

                                 was with him at the time. Would probably be buried at Cemetery near Railway line,

                                 Villers-Brettonneux Station. Came from N.S.W."

"In B. Coy" Single. He was hit by a bullet in the stomach at Villers Brettonneaux about

                                 4.30 p.m. out in the open during a counter attack. He died the same night at the R.A.P.

                                 & was buried in the Cemetery there."

"Clouten was a fisherman in N.S.W. before joining the army. He was slow of speech

                                 and had marks on his face as small pox. He was killed while in the billet at Villers

                                 Bretonneaux about 3 p.m. Nineteen men were killed by one shell which hell on the billet.

                                 He was one of them. I saw him after he was killed. He was badly damaged and buried

                                 Villers Brettonneaux. A cross was placed on the grave."

"Description, from some Lake District. His father was a fisherman.
I saw Pte. Leo Clouten (35 B. VII) after he had been killed by a shell on April 4th at

                                 Villers Brettonneaux., while we were making a counter attack. He had been wounded on

                                 April 3rd and was supposed to go out, but he would not go, and joined in the counter

                                 attack. He was lying on the ground when I saw him. He was buried in the cemetery at

                                 Villers Brettonneaux the Padre told us. The ground was held."

                                 He saw service in France where he was promoted from Corporal to Sergeant on the 1st

                                 March 1917. In April 1918 he was transferred from the 36th to the 33rd Battalion.
Albert was wounded (shot gun wound head) in action in the field on the 29th August

"Whilst we were moving into action on 30-8-18, a shell burst near No. 770 Sgt. A. V.

                                 Goodsir, causing severe injuries to the head and rendering him immediately unconscious.

                                 He was placed on a stretcher and carried at once to a field hospital a few hundred yards

                                 away. He died at the hospital that day and was buried in the military Cemetery -

                                 SUSANNE - near by. He suffered no pain at all. His death was keenly felt by all, for he

                                 was loved and respected by officers and men for his practical common sense,

                                 cheerfulness at all times, courage and resource in danger.
We lost many comrades that battle but none more thought more of than Sgt. Goodsir

                                 whose memory is still with us as one of the best and bravest of soldiers and good comrade."

"Henn East of Peronne he was hit by a shell while going up to the front near Railway

                                 Line at night about 10 o'clock. He died very soon after and I saw him killed. I knew him

                                 very well as we were in a AO school together."

"Informant described Goodsir as about 5'6" high, slight build, very fair complexion,

                                 aged about 27 years.
Informant states that they both belonged to "C" Company, on or about 29.8.18 the

                                 Battalion was moving up to the line at "Curlew at the back of Hont St. Quentin beyond

                                 Bray. Just before sunrise, while they were having spell, Goodsir was hit in the head by

                                 a shell while he was sitting down. Informant was about 20 yards away and saw the

                                 shell explode and also went over to Goodsir and found him unconscious. He saw him

                                 put on a stretcher and taken away in all probability to the 9th Field Ambulance.

                                 Informant never saw him again, but believes that he died the same day, and that he was

                                 buried between Chipilly and Bray.
Informant added that Goodsir was thought a lot of by his mates. He was always jolly,

                                 and when killed, was sitting down telling a yard to some of his mates."

"Informant described Goodsir as about 5ft 6 inches high, medium build, fair complexion,

                                 aged about 30 years. He was either an Engineer or a Fireman on the Railways, and

                                 thought to have come from Goulburn.
Informant states that they both belonged to C. Company. No. 9 Platoon. On or about

                                 29.8.18 the Battalion was marching up into Supports between Bray and Perenne and

                                 went into action the next day. About 7 p.m. while they were sitting down in a Sunken

                                 Road a 5.9 shell burst near by and hit Goodsir in the head, rendering him unconscious.

                                 Informant saw him fall. The doctor came along and said that Goodsir's case was hopeless.

                                 Informant saw Goodsir put on a stretcher and taken away and never saw him again.

                                 The  Battalion had to go on just afterwards, and Informant was himself wounded two
