Maitland Mercury,
Saturday, November 13th 1880 Death by Drowning of an old Resident of the
Hunter.
"On Thursday forenoon,
Mr John King, and old resident of the Morpeth district, was drowned
in the Hunter River, near
Narrowgut. "From the particulars given at the inquest held
before Mr. A. Vindin, coroner, on Thursday
afternoon, it seemed that
the unfortunate man had breakfast about eight o'clock that morning;
after which he went outside
the house, and sat upon a log. The daughter-in-law had occasion to
leave the house for a few
minutes, and on her return she missed the deceased. "Enquires were made as
to his whereabouts, and being unsuccessful, a search was instituted for
him. After searching about
the premises the deceased's relatives went down to the river, and
there saw traces on the bank, and
the deceased's hat floating in the water. The bank at this part
was steep, and close to the
water's edge there were marks as is some one had slipped into the river.
Information was at
once given to the police, and the body, which was floating on the water, face
downwards, some distance
from where it was supposed that the deceased had fallen in, was
taken
out of
the river. "Dr. Howe gave it as his opinion that death resulted from
drowning. A verdict of accidentally
drowned was recorded. The
deceased was over ninety years of age, and has been very childish
lately (note: last few
words of article are missing).
