Notes for George Whiteman:

BIOGRAPHY: George was the son of Frances Whiteman. This is known from information by

Janet Doyle. Frances was the sixth child in a family of 11 children of William and Mary Whiteman.

The family lived on a farm at Udimore, near Rye, Sussex. Frances a widower and sheep farmer

aged 40 George joined his father as Frances Whtieman and Sons, pit sawyer located on the

Waiwhetu Stream or further up the Hutt. They moved to Taita abt 1846. George was out pig

hunting and discovered the valley. He reported it to Govenor Grey . He had the pick of the first 20

blocks, surveyed in 1846. He nominated a section in the valley when the land grant fell due for

services in the Maori Wars. George had been in the party which tramped through the bush from

Taita to Paremata redoubt when Te Rauparaha was Kapiti. The grant line was in his fathers name

and was granted in 1847. George took up the first State Advances Loan-alongside his name

number one in the books.

George had sawmills on his own land in Whitemans Valley and in other locations. He was often

away. Eliza , his wife, was said to have had affairs (...she her biography for further

information).George assisted his daughter-in-law Matilda Jane on the farm, but as a sheep man,

he insisted he couldn't do any milking. He was good with a gun if provisions ran low. He had a

firm attitude to shooting_ it was only for meeting needs, not a sport.

George was living with his son John at the time of his death.
