Notes for John James Augustine Vaughan:

The Gundagai Independent 18th April 1988

Five surviving members of the Gundagai Troop of the Seventh Light Horse Regiment

have been invited to the opening of Australia's new Parliament House by HM Queen

Elizabeth early next month. Those invited are Joe Luff, Bob Luff, Jack Vaughan, Jim

Slater and Jack Pollack.

Jack Pollack was the "wee laddie" of the group, celebrating his 18th birthday while in

camp at Canberra for the 1927 opening of the present Parliament House. The

Gundagai Troop on that day formed the Royal Guard for the Duke of York, who

performed the opening ceremony.

We have failed to find a photo of the complete Troop which took part in that historic

occasion, but Joe Luff has found this photo which shows some members of the

Troop, whose OC was the famed Jim McArthur-Onslow, taken when they won the

Prince of Wales Cup, a trophy given for efficiency among the Light Horse Units.

Those pictured are (rear L to R) - Arthur Sheather, Stan Walsh, Jumbo Foster, Charlie

Luff, Ern Chalker, George Cherry, Col Vaughan, Bill Crain, George Smith, Jack

Stuckey and Herb Scheuner. In Front are - Lt. Ryries, Lt. Jim McArthur-Onslow, Sgt.

Arch Stuckey, Colonel Tynam, Sgt. Joe Luff and Corporal Jack Vaughan.

For Bob and Edna Luff there will be an additional thrill for they have been chosen to

be presented to the Queen and Prince Phillip in the Great Hall of the new building.

Representatives from all walks of Australian life have been chosen for this honour.

IN MEMORIAM

CASTLES, Esma Joan, passed away 20/8/77.

The wind of love blows gently on a quite peaceful place, Where the one we love is

sleeping, And can never be replaced. They say the heart doesn't break so easily, But

sad that isn't true. The day she quietly slipped away, And our hearts broke in two.

Sadly missed, never forgotten.
