Notes fpr Ernest E Elphick:
The Gundagai Independent 6th April 2006 A LONG LIFE WELL LIVED - Death
of Ern Elphick Ernest Edward ("Nugget") Elphick died suddenly at Gundagai
Hospital on Tuesday
just a
little over a month short of his 100th birthday. He would have turned 100 on
27th May. Ern spent all his life in this district, at Back Station Creek,
Nangus, Tarrabandra and Gundagai. His death ends a long and good life, and
severs a connection with a bygone era. Ern was quite possibly the last
surviving Australian who could claim a transported
convict as a grandfather. His grandfather, James Elphick, was among the
convicts to be sent out from England
in the
19th century. His wife, Olive, a member of the Smart family, predeceased
him. Ern was the son of John and Olive Elphick. His children Shirley
Polsen, Eunice Wells, James ("Jim") and Harold survive him. One daughter,
Phyllis, predeceased him. Fourteen grandchildren, thirty-five great
grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren survive him. For the last
ten years Ern has been a resident of Uralba Aged Hostel. Despite suffering
from blindness, he was extremely self sufficient until about a year
ago being able to dress and shower himself. He bore his
affliction with a remarkable fortitude, a courage which was typical of the
man. "Nugget", as he was affectionately known, followed rural pursuits all his
working life. He worked as a shearer and on properties for the late Bob Beatty
at
Tarrabandra and for the Crowe family at Gobarralong. He bore a well-earned
reputation as a top worker, always willing, ever loyal. In fact he treated
those of who he worked, particularly the Crowe family, as if they were his
own. He had a great love of the outdoors. One of his favourite pastimes
and money raisers was fox hunting. In his younger days he played cricket and
football and remained a fan of those sports throughout his life. Ern was an
immensely likeable man. It was always a delight to be in his company. He
was a wonderful family man, and a true salt of the earth type, steadfast in
friendship and always reliable. Perhaps the greatest example he leaves us is
the way he coped with his blindness, never letting that affliction dim his
cheery nature. His death ends a long life, lived well. He was a true
Australian. His funeral takes place today, interment in the Nangus Cemetery
following a service in St Paul's Church at the village at 2
p.m.
