ARTIE CRANE
DIES
One of Gundagai's best loved
citizens, Artie Crane, died in the Gundagai Hospital in
the early hours of Friday 27
July. He was 94 years of age.
With the exception only of
his army service in World War II, Artie lived all his life in
the Gundagai
district.
He was born at Adelong
Crossing (now Tumblong) on 12th February, 1913 as the
fourth child, and second
son, of Johon Benjamin Crane and Phoebe (nee Elphick). He
was christened Arthur Arthur
Ernest Fielder Crane.
Ray, youngest of the family
- now a resident of Uralba - is Artie's only surviving
sibling.His other sisters and
brothers who predeceased him were Lucy Worsnop, May
Dowell, Don, Tom, Les, Arnold, Syd
and Lionel.
In 1932 Artie married Mary
Smith in St. John's Church of England at Gundagai - the
two had met through their
shared common passion for playing tennis. Artie and Mary
had four children - Fay
Hawker of South Gundagai, Cliff (Oatley, Sydney), John
(Yerrinbool), and Rhonda
Jones, (Brisbane). They had six grandchildren and 11
great-
grandchildren.
Mary passed away in 1983 and
Artie continued living in their Punch Street home up
until some 18 months ago
when he entered Uralba Hostel.
All of Artie and Mary's
children, like Artie himself, were students at South Gundagai
School, both
during and after their schooling, Artie was involved as Secretary and
President of the School's P
& C Association over a number of years.
During his lifetime Artie
had only three employers.
- he worked prior to
enlistment at Butcher's General Store at South
Gundagai, and for
the Waugh family on
"Stockdale" station, Gobarralong.
After discharge he returned
firstly to "Stockdale", returning again later to Butcher's
Store.
Then from April 1953 to
retirement in February 1978 Artie worked for Gundagai Shire
Council, most of that period
as a grader driver on Council roads.
Although a useful league
player, as a youngster, Artie's greatest sporting passion was
playing and fostering tennis
in the district.
Uncoached but with the
benefit of unusually keen eye and great anticipation, he was
among the top half dozen
tennis players in the district over some 50 years.
By his readiness to roll up
his sleeves whenever things needed to be done and
willingness to take on
executive positions at club and district level Artie was, with a
few other stalwarts, largely
responsible for tennis flourishing throughout the district for
decades.
He was also much involved
with fostering coaching of district youngsters.
His contribution to the
sport was acknowledged when he was made life member of the
District Tennis
Association.
By 1986 Artie had been a
mainstay of the Gundagai RSL Branch for 40 years, having
joined upon his discharge
from the AIF, in which he served with the Australian Special
Wireless
Group.
Art was stationed in
Darwin when that
city was under continual bombing raids from
the
Japanese.
In the intervening 40 years
he had been a long time member of the Board of the Branch
and was also Treasurer and
Welfare Officer over many years.
It was mainly for his
outstanding commitment as Welfare Officer over 20 odd years
that the Branch honoured him
with Life Membership in 1986.
His commitment to the Branch
activities continued right up until his death.
Artie was also a dedicated
Legatee over a long period, and many district residents had
cause to be very grateful
for his concern for their welfare.
Artie Crane's pride in
Gundagai and district as a place to live was
outstanding.
For that unflagging pride
and his contribution to the district in so many ways he was
honoured in 1992 by being
named the Gundagai Council Citizen of the Year.
A quiet but genial man,
courteous at every level, Artie was universally liked. His
considered opinions on
matters was sought and respected by many.
The district is poorer for
Artie's passing.
His funeral takes place
today (Monday).
A service in St. Jame's
Anglican Church, South Gundagai, at 2 p.m. if being followed by
interment in South Gundagai Cemetery.
