BILL CLARKSON'S DEATH

William George Clarkson, one of Gundagai's best known citizens died in the Pat

McAlister Wing of Gundagai Hospital on Friday.

Bill was 86 years of age.

He was an immensely likeable man.

Bill was born in Gundagai on 5-8-1918, the son of the late William and Mary Clarkson.

He is survived by one son Darrel (Goulburn).

Bill was predeceased by his wife Maisie, son Brian and daughter Eileen Lindley.

Bill was the brother of Doris Clarkson (Sydney), Enid Cavana (Sydney), Melva

McAlister (Gundagai), Betty Makeham (Gundagai), Jean Collingridge (Gundagai),

Joan Porter (deceased), Les (deceased), Ken (Deceased) and Edward (deceased).

There are four grandchildren and five great grandchildren also left to mourn Bill's

passing.

As a young man, Bill followed rural pursuits.

A member of the 21st Light Horse, Bill served during World War II, seeing active

service in the Pacific campaigns.

He sailed for New Guinea with the 21st Reconnaissance Battalion.

He served as a motor cycle despatch rider early in his Army career, and on his

discharge in December 1945 was serving as a Craftsman with 5th Australian Division

Carrier Company.

After the war he worked in the bush, including a stint at Merrybindinyah Station,

before joining the DMR (now the RTA).

He rose to the rank of foreman and stayed with the road authority until his retirement.

Bill was a great family man, deeply attached to all his family members.

He suffered a huge blow in March 1998 when his wife, Maisie to whom he was

devoted, died.

Bill suffered a stroke several weeks later.

He then went to live with his daughter Eileen, and her husband, Geoff Lindley.

But late in 1998 he became resident of the Pat McAlister Wing at Gundagai Hospital.

At first he was still active, pottering about in the hospital garden and being close

enough to his old Tor Street home to be able to keep an eye on the garden there too.

He suffered another huge grief in 2000 when Eileen died and then again in 2002 when

his son-in-law Geoff also passed away suddenly.

In February of this year he suffered another stroke and his health rapidly deteriorated.

Bill was a great favourite with the staff at Gundagai Hospital.

He had a winning nature.

Bill was a man with a great love of the outdoor life.

He was never happier than when walking the hills fox hunting or on the river bank

fishing.

A stalwart member of the RSL he was a familiar figure each Anzac Day as one of the

flag bearers in Gundagai's march.

His funeral will take place tomorrow (Tuesday).

A service in St John's Anglican Church at 10 a.m. will be followed by interment in

Gundagai law Cemetery.

An RSL graveside service will be conducted.
