and sentenced for 10 years. He was transported on the Earl Grey (2) which departed on 8.8.1838

and arrived in Port Jackson on 21.11.1838 from Portsmouth, 571 tons, master was James Talbert

and surgeon was Alexander Nisbett. His crime (coded npch) I guess was stealing in Mutchetts

Wood at Munden House, Watford property of Elizabeth Margaret Hibbert.
Source:"Transported beyond the seas" by Frank Griffen,Hertfordshire Records Office.

Ships indent for Earl Grey(2) lists his real name as John Thorn, and William Goodman is in fact his

alias name. He was 26 years of age, could Read only, a Protestant and Single. Native Place was

Hertfordshire and was a farm labourer. He was caught for poaching and tried at Hertford Assizes

on 28th Feb 1838. Sentenced for 10 years and had a former conviction of 3 months. He was 5 feet 8

1/4 inches, brown hair, hazel eyes, complexion was dark and ruddy. He had a mark of a bird,

woman, MC on lower right arm and W.B. EBS on lower left arm. The Earl Grey carried 290 male

convicts.
His Ticket of Leave  no. 43/2804  dated 12th Dec 1843 still has him listed as John Thorn (alias

William Goodman). He was allowed to remain in the district of Scone dated August 1843.
Written across it is  PP 45/676, perhaps that was his pardon no.?
