Moses Goodfellow & Jane Smith

1.  Moses10 Goodfellow  (Francis9, Richard8, George7, Richard6, Francis5, Thomas4, Richard3,

Richard2, Richard1) was born 1809 in Fovant, Wiltshire, England, and died January 14, 1877 in

Bukkulla, New South Wales.

He married Jane Smith (Source: Carmel  McMullen. 2004) October 26, 1836 in Fovant, Wiltshire,

England, daughter of John Smith and Martha Clarke.  She was born 1812 in Saint Mary, Wilton

By Salisbury, Wiltshire, England, and died July 03, 1885.

Notes for Moses Goodfellow:

Armidale Express 26th January 1877

A coroner's inquest was held at Bukkulla, on Monday last, by W. W. Fraser, Esq., and a Jury of five, on the body of Moses Goodfellow, who, on the previous day, had been found hanging to the rafter of the kitchen of a house near Bukkulla. The following witnesses were examined:- Senior Constable Daly, Mrs. Goodfellow (wife of the deceased), Thos. Goodfellow (her son), and James Brooks. From the evidence of these witnesses, it was shown that Goodfellow on Sunday sent to Mr. Brosie's wine-shop for six bottles of wine, three of which were given him, which he drank. Shortly afterwards he demanded the other three, and having got them drank them also. He then asked his wife for a pound, and when she gave that to him, he asked for another, saying "that he would clear out." His wife having given him the second pound, he took off one of his boots and struck her in the eye with it, and then went and lay down under a tree. This seems to have been the last time that he was seen whilst alive. Later in the day his step-son (Thos. Goodfellow) came to the place, and seeing old Goodfellow's dogs lying in front of the kitchen door, he went up and opened the door, and was horrified to the old man hanging to a rafter by a rope. Overcome with terror, instead of cutting Goodfellow down, he hastened up to Bukkulla station and reported the circumstances to the manager, Mr. Borthwick, who on hearing of it, went for assistance to Judge's wine-shop. The witness Brooks, on learning what had happened, jumped on Mr. Borthwick's horse and galloped to the place where Goodfellow was hanging, and found him with his feet touching the ground, and the body still warm. He at once cut him down, and made strenuous efforts to restore animation, but without avail. After hearing the evidence, the Jury found a verdict that the deceased had hanged himself, whilst in an unsound state of mind. The deceased was a very old man, upwards of 70 years, and had been many years resident in this district, where he once owned a farm. He has left an aged widow, to whom he had been married more than 40 years, and a large family.
