Last Will – 6th April 1801

William Metcalf of the parish of Lydd in the county of Kent being very infirm in health but of

 perfect mind and in memory do make and xxxx this my last will and testament in form

 following first I desire to be buried in stout mason at the direction of my Executors living

after me xxxx xxxx and then after my xxxx death and funeral expenses are paid I give and xxxx

all muy property both real and personal of whatever xxxx it is or where-ever it situated to be

equally xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx my half brother Francis Metcalf, xxxx Metcalf and George

Metcalf and the children of my late half brother Edward to share their fathers part amongst

them share and share alike….. that the four children of my late half brother Edward shall be

entitled only to one fourth part of my property real and personal to go equally xxxx xxxx

them share and share alike and my will is that is my brother George is without sons of his

body carefully begotten that then his share shall return to the two sons of my other three

Brothers xxxx Francis Metcalf Henry Metcalf and my late brother Edaward and xxxx xxxx

Transcription of George Metcalf's will dated 21 February 1850.

This is the last Will and Testament of one George Metcalf of Battle in the County of Sussex

Boot and Shoemaker.  I desire to be buried in the Unitarian Chapel Yard of Battle.  I appoint

my two sons William and Horace Metcalf my executors and that they shall sell my House

and Garden Furniture, etc, etc.  And after paying all my just debts that Balance to be

equally divided between my five sons William Metcalf Horace Metcalf Lester Metcalf Henry

Metcalf and George Metcalf.  And that the part or share due to George Metcalf now in Sidney

shall be put into the hands of a Mr William Noakes of Battle for him to pay over onto the

said George Metcalf on his personal application.  Dated 21 February 1850 - George Metcalf -

Witnesses to the testator - Signatures George King - William White."

"On the first day of December one thousand eight hundred and fifty two the Administration

of the Goods Chattles and Effects and the execution of this last Will and Testament of

George Metcalf of the exempt jurisdiction of Battle lately deceased was granted to William

Metcalf and Horace Metcalf the Executors named in this Will they being first sons duly to

execute the same - John Littler Dean of Battle."

I have checked the marriage register of Battle (ref PAR 236/1/1/4) and can confirm that George

Metcalfe of Battle, bachelor, and Elizabeth Cuthbert of Battle, spinster, were married by banns

on 1 Jan 1806, and the witnesses were Sarah P Kenward and William Metcalf.

It is interesting to note that most of George's sons had themselves Baptised at St Mary the

Virgin Church of England, Battle two years after the death of their father.
