Notes for Edwin Metcalf:

NATIONAL AWARD FOR COURAGE, DEVOTION AND HUMANITY

By Royal Order, 23rd May 1865, the medal, first class, has been awarded to Edwin Metcalf,

skipper of the boat "Ann", living at Ramsgate for the following act.

- The Belgian sloop "Bertha", on the 9th February 1865, was sailing 16 miles S-SE of Ostend,

when she was struck by a violent gust of wind which completely stored in her rudder and stern-

post; despite the efforts of her sailors, the boat was awash and on the point of sinking, when it

was noticed by the crew of the boat "Ann", skippered by Edwin Metcalf of Ramsgate, who

steered for the ship in distress and the Belgian sailors managed, with the help of their rowboat,

and with the assistance of the English fishermen - to board the smack "Ann" without accident,

where they received all the care their misfortune called for. Skipper Metcalf, then abandoning

his fishing, set sail for Ramsgate where he landed 5 Belgian sailors. (The 5 Belgian sailors disembarked.)

The above is the translation of a framed certificate awarded to Edwin Metcalf by Belgium. A

gold medal accompanied the certificate.

The above is held by Lindsay ?

Won a National Award for courage in 1865 saving the lives of Belgian fisherman whose ship

sunk off Ostend.  Edwin was the skipper of the Ann.
