Hounsell. They arrived in Sydney on August 17th 1841.

Registeration: June 26, 1819, Great Meeting-Presbyterian Or Unitarian, Battle, Sussex, England

Census: 1841, Prospect, Parramatta, New South Wales

George obtained work as a labourer for Kphn Oxley Jnr at his property "Kirkham",  Camden -

George's first child Sarah was born there.

1870-1871 Electrol Roll: Oxley Street, Camden, New South Wales

Camden 1872 showing Edward Street.

In the Grevilles Directory NSW 1872, George was recorded as a labourer living in Edward Street,  Camden.

"When his wife died at age 51 in 1874, George was aged about 55. They both appear to have still

been living in Camden where all of their children seem to have been born and he had the responsibility of

raising Alice aged 8; Edward 13 and Emmeline 16. By then Lucy was aged 24; Charlotte 27; Henry 29; and

Sarah 31. Emily, the first born had died at age 1 in 1857 and a second child was born of whom nothing is

currently known. No doubt the older children rallied around and assisted their father through this difficult

period."

Occupation: 1877, Farm Labourer

George survived for another 16 years after his wife died and appears to have moved from Camden

to Sydney where he died at "May Cottage" 58 (now 46) Junior St. Leichhardt, Sydney, at the home

of his daughter and son-in-law Alice Metcalf and William Henry Pollard. George died of senile

decay over a period of 2 years.

George was attended during his declining years by Dr. Kendall of Petersham who last saw George

on 19 April 1890. George was aged 71 at death

Death: May 24, 1890 in "May Cottage" 58 Junior  St, Leichardt, Sydney, New South Wales

Burial: May 25, 1890, Church of England Section, Waverley Cemetery, Sydney,  New South Wales

Death Ref.: No. 148391/0607
George's funeral service was conducted by Rev. R.A. Woodthorpe, Church
of England, Minister.

Although the death certificate refers to his being buried in the Church of England section, of  the

cemetery, the burial plot, No. 95 Ordinary, Section 5, is located in the General Section, adjoining

thevarious Church of England sections. The burial plot, on inspection in Feb. 2004, was very

overgrown and had only a stone surround with no memorial headstone. Waverly Cemetery

records reveal that the plot also contains an Edward Metcalf, aged 35 years (no date of interment)

and a Charles Partridge who was interred there on 22 Sep 1956 aged 55 years.

Further research indicates Edmund James, George's son, died in 1886 and was the first interment,

followed by George Metcalf 4 years later in 1890. Following a gap of 66 years, George's grandson,

Charles Partridge, was also interred there on 22 Sep 1956 aged 55 years. The last Right of Burial

still current was issued to a Mrs. Charles Taylor. Edward's sister Sarah married Charles Taylor at

Camden in 1862 (refer on-line marriage index entry No. 1714 of 1862 - not verified), and her daughter

Ivy May Taylor married Robert or Herbert Partridge at Woollahra in 1895.  Note that Edward is

shown, in his father's death certificate, as having died at age 25 years and the cemetery have no

recorded date of interment for Edward, only noting his age (possibly incorrectly) at 35 years. The

cemetery incorrectly records the surnames with an "e" although the death indexes

show the spelling correctly.  The grave is most easily located along the northern perimeter

(Trafalgar St.) side of the cemetery in the row two downhill from the tiny shelter shed at the

Collingwood St. intersection. There is no memorial on grave number 95. Adjoining memorials are

92 Stevenson, 93 Mildwater, 94 Inglis - bare grass plot, 95 Metcalfe - no memorial, 96 Fisher and

Stacey (memorial very weathered), 97 Holdsworth.
The informant for George's death was his son-in-law William Henry Pollard. He was unaware as to

where, at what age, and to whom, George was married. Nor did he know the Christian name of

George's father nor any details of his mother. He did know that George was married in the

Church of England, that he had been 43 years in the Colony and the names, but not the ages of,

his living and deceased children
