Metcalf:
Henry Metcalf married Eliza
Ann Boardman at Cobbity on the 17th March 1868. Their first child
Melinda was born 4 July
1869 at Camden.
Henry and Eliza would have experienced the
devastating
floods
that engulfed the Camden region from February 1860. At its height the
water
was 12 meters
over
the bridge. Houses were destroyed and seed and topsoil disappeared
from
newly planted
fields.
There was also trouble with the sheep. Henry and Eliza decided to
move to
Tarcutta to work
for a
Mr. Mate.
Later Henry took up farming
at Kimo and Wanterbadgery.

“…..There was a very big
piece of road leading past the Tenendra w.w. Last week
the Illabo Shire sent along its
grader in charge of Mr Metcalf . in a few days the
grader transformed the road into a
carriage drive. To accomplish this the same work
by pick and shovel would have taken
a gang of 20 men about two months. for certain
classes of
road
work the grader is par excellence . Mr Metcalf ‘s staff consisted of 3
men 4 horses."

Funeral in Junee on Monday
Morning
After his death in Junee at
the week-end, the funeral of the late Alfred Metcalfe, of
Belmore
Street, took place on Monday
morning.
The Rector of St. Luke's,
Rev. Henry Staples official at the graveside, and interment
was in the Church of England
portion of the Junee cemetery.
The pall-bears were the
deceased's sons Mick, Albert, Less and Tom with his son-in-
law, Mr. Ray
Oehm.
The floral tray was carried
by Messrs H. Holden and D.Horne.
Funeral arrangements were in
the hands of Mr A. G. Morris, of Junee, and amongst
the wreaths at the gravesite

The mother of twelve
children, nine boys and three girls, has passed away in
the
person if Mrs Clara Ann
Metcalfe, of Belmore street,
Junee.
Her mother lived to be 104
Years.
Mrs Metcalfe, aged 91Years,
was born in the Gundagai district where her Parents
the Williams, con-ducted the
combined coaching stage and hotel outside of Nangus
at "Kimo"
.
Two of Mrs Metcalfe's children have passed away, one
of
whom was involved in a street accident with one of the
earliest cars ever to come
to town. Her three sons still reside In Junee - Mr G.A.
("Beau"), Metcalfe, Mr. L.
("Boss") Metcalfe and Mr. A. J.
("Mick") Metcalfe.
Her surviving daughters are
Mrs. Millie Samuels of Nowra, Mrs
Doris Smart of
Nowra, Mrs Vera Holden of
Albury, Mrs Thelma Mitchell of
Sydney,
Mrs Zaida Shaw of Young, Mrs
Enid Johnson of Balmain and Mrs Alma
Oehm of
Young.
Mrs. Metcalfe was the widow
of the late Mr Alf. Metcalfe who was a prominent
road contractor in this area
for many years.
Her funeral takes place
to-morrow.

a. Mix of children is the reverse - 3 boys and

b. Daughter Enid Johnson
told the story of the early accident and said that the motor
vehicle was owned by the
local doctor.
c. "her parents, the

Local man dies in
fire.
A 74 year old man died when
fire completely gutted his home at the corner of George
& Ducker St early last
Thursday morning. He was Roy William Metcalf who lived in
the house most of his life. A
neighbour, Mr Reg Brown attempted to rescue Mr
Metcalf but was driven back by the
flames and called the fire brigade. Two firemen
donned breathing apparatus and
entered the rear of the house but could get no further
than the laundry. Mr Metcalfs body
was later found in a chair in the
lounge room.
The fire is
believed
to have started in a corner of the lounge-room,but the exact cause
of the fire
has
not been
established.
Mr Metcalf was the son of
the late Frederick and Maude Metcalf.
He is survived by one
brother Reg (Dubbo) and 3 sisters . Mona (Mrs Brown, Moss
Vale) Edie (Mrs earl,
Wagga), Ma (Mrs
Ritchard, Grafton)
Another brother predeceased
him. The funeral was held on Tuesday, with a service in
St. Paul's
Uniting
Church and interment in the
Junee cemetry.
