Bateman:
Edward enlisted with the
A.I.F. on the 11th June 1916 at Tumbarumba, New South
Wales. He is described as
5ft 4 1/2in. 9st 8lbs with a Medium complexion, Bown eyes
and Dark Brown
hair. Edward was marched over to France in May 1917 and then in Belgium on
the 3rd
August 1917 he was wounded
in action "and remaining at duty." In August 1917 he
rejoined his Unit. On the
19th October 1918 in France, he was admitted to the 14th
Australian Field Ambulance
sick - suffering Trench Fever. He was then transferred to
the 3rd Australian General
Hospital, Abberville, France and "Died of disease
(Pneumonia) Death due to
exposure" on the 25th October 1918. WILL "This is the last Will
and Testemant of me Edward Jacob Bateman of
Tumbarumba in the State of
New South Wales a member of the Australian Imperial
Expeditionary Forces AFTER
PAYMENT of all my just debts funeral and
testamentary expenses I
hereby appoint my wife Alice Ada Bateman sole executrix and
Trustee of this my will and
guardian of my infant children and I HEREBY give devise
and bequeath the whole of my
Real and Personal Estate of whatsoever kind and
wheresoever situate to the
said Alice Ada Bateman for her sole and absolute use and
benefit AND I hereby revoke
all former wills made by me and declare this to me my
true last Will and
Testament. DATED at Tumbarumba aforesaid this eighth day of July
A.D. 1916. On the 30th
May 1919, Edward's wife, Alice, signed recipt of his personal effects from
the A.I.F. which contained:
1 Disc, 4 Pipes, 1 Safety Razor, 2 Knives, 1 Money Belt, 1
Pocket Book, 1 French
dictionary, 1 Metal Chain, 2 Shoulder titles, 1 Mirror, 1 YMCA
