Notes for Henry
Thiele:
Manning River News
12 June 1869 "Henry Thiele was permitted to ply with a boat for hire at the
Wingham crossing of the Manning,
with the distinct
understanding that passenger were to be taken up and landed upon Government
ground, and not upon
private property."
The Manning River
Times 14th August 1869 TABLE TALK A SAD ACCIDENT - Almost everybody on
the Manning knew old HENRY THIELE, who was
once the lessee of the
Tinonee Punt, then a market gardener resident upon the glebe, and more
latterly a waterman at
Wingham; and no one will hear without regret that the old man has been
drowned. It seems that he
was removing his household goods to his new home, last Tuesday, in a
boat; that he was towed
from the Woolla by the Price Alfred; and cast off when that vessel had
reached Wingham Wharf. It
was then late at night, but the deceased had only a few hundred
yards before him, and he
determined to go on. This was the last time he was ever seen alive. The
next morning, some one on
board the Price Alfred saw the boat floating down the stream, with the
furniture still on board,
and the captain at once sent up to Wingham, to enquire for the owner. Not
finding him there, a
constable came down to Tinonee, but whilst the officer was away, a few
persons discovered the
body, lying in shallow water, near the landing, and took it to the Court
House, where an inquest has
been since held. Of course there could be but one verdict in such a
case - accidental death. No
doubt the old man fell into the water whilst climbing over a cask that
stood in the bow of his
boat, and being stiff and cold, he was unable to reach the shore. He
married a widow with a
house full of children, a few months ago, and these are now left to mourn
his loss. It is also stated
that he has a daughter by a former wife, now living in
Germany.
