Notes for CORNELIUS
WHOLOHAN:
Cornelius Holohan (later
Wholohan) was charged with highway robbery in Tipperary, Ireland in
1831. He was convicted and
sentenced to transportation for life.
He arrived in Australia aboard
the "Norfolk" in 1832. He was
assigned to John Dickson, the owner of Orielton Estate at
Cowpastur
In 1835, the Reverend
Therry told him that the government was assisting numbers to come to
this
country for free. On
hearing this news he decided to apply for his wife and children to join him.
As he could neither read
nor write, the Reverend Therry
wrote two letters on his behalf.
The first
to his wife Biddy
,extract; " I am happy to inform
you that I remain in good health and spirits. You
and my children alone makes
me happy the painful thought of being seperated from you in
whom
my soul is centered brings
forth many a sigh from my bosom, but I fervently hope the time will
not
belong before you are
restored to him whose every act shall be to make you comfortable
and
happy" the second to the
Reverend Byrness of Thurles. These
lettters are in the Mitchell Library.

Note: Rev John Joseph
Therry who wrote Cornelius's letter home in June 1835 was appointed
"Vicar General of Tasmania"
in 1838
John Therry was born in Cork in 1790. He studied
in Carlow
College (1812-15)
and
was ordained priest in
1815. For the following five years he ministered in Cork city, for the
last
three years of which he was
attached to the Cathedral. Walking one day in the streets, a wagon
of
Irish convicts passed him.
These he learned were being conveyed to Botany Bay, a penal
settlement near the present
city of Sydney.
He resolved to follow them as their chaplain.
He arrived in Sydney on 3rd May 1820 and
for eighteen years he laboured among the neglected
and degraded convicts,
earning for himself the grand title of Parish Priest of Australia.
He
purchased the site on which
the present St Mary's Cathedral stands, and on it, largely by
Irish
convict labour he built the
first permanent church in Australia. In 1838 he went to Van
Dieman's
land, the present
Tasmania. In
1858 he returned to Sydney where he was given the title
of
Archpriest, and where for
the next six years he laboured as Parish Priest of Balmain until his
death
in 1864. He was buried in
the crypt of St. Mary's Cathedral. Vid. his Life and Letters of

Notes for BRIDGET (BIDDY) MOLLOY:
Bridget (Biddy) Molloy,
born about 1805 in Ireland, father John Molloy and
mother Norah.
Bridget married Cornelius
Holohan (later spelt Wholohan) in the Parish of Thurles. In 1831
Bridget
was the mother of two
children, Honora 2, Patrick a baby, when she received the terrible news
that
her husband was found
guilty of highway robbery and sentenced to transportation to the
NSW
colony.
She was left to care for
her children, at a time when the decline in living standads were both
rapid
and dangerous. Food was
scarce, milk had practically disappeared from the diet of the
poorest
two million of the
population. During bad seasons 1822,1831,1835-37, potato crops failed
whole
localities were destitute
and famine and starvation were rife. They would have held little hope
of
seeing Cornelius again in
Ireland.
Bridget kept in touch with
Cornelius by letter . In 1835 the
reverand Therry on Cornelius's behalf
wrote entreating Biddy to
come to the colony with the children. At the Constabulary Office in
Ireland on the
23rd November, 1839 a reference was written recommending that Bidddy
Molloy
and her children join
Connor at the Governments expence. This petition was granted and
they
sailed on the "Isabella' in
February, 1840. The vessel was
chartered for the transportation of
female convicts. Biddy was
said to be 37, Honora 11, and Patrick 9.
They arrived in Sydney on the 24th July,
1840, ending 160 days at sea. Nine long years had
passed since Biddy saw
Cornelius, One can only imagen their joy at being reunited. Bridget
their
third child was born at
Mulgoa, John at Greendale, Ellen at Vermont and
Michael at Greendale.
They acquired land in the
Parishof Werombi in 1862. After his death Cornelius left his real
estate
to Biddy who was to hold it
in trust for her grandson.
In 1885 Biddy , Post office
Brownlow Hill had 152 acres, 2 horses, 10 cattle and 2 pigs.
Bridget Wholohan died the
1st May, 1890 of old age (85) at Bobs Range,
