Crowcombe, Somerset, England, and died 09 Sep 1937 in Sutherland, New South Wales.

She married JOHN EDWARD FITZGERALD 08 Jan 1863 in Hartley, New South Wales, son of

DENIS FITZGERALD and HANNAH COLLINS.  He was born 08 Nov 1845 in Sydney, New South

Wales, and died 18 Jan 1913 in Hampden Street, Penshurst, Sydney, New South Wales.

Notes for Eliza Louisa Williams:

Diocese. She died ( September, 1937, aged 91 years and buried at Woronora Cem.

"Propeller" Hurstville (Sydney), Newspaper July 23 1936

Mrs Eliza Fitzgerald of Gloucester Road celebrated her 90th birthday this week. She has resided

in Hurstville since 1899 and seen changes from bark shanties and trees in Forest Road to the

biggest shopping centre in the suburban area. She said the secret of long life was plain living,

hard workand early rising. She can still read without aid of glasses, gives a hand in the ordinary

household duties and is known for her cooking of jams. As a young wife she assisted in all the

hard work onfarms in the country, thinking of nothing of chopping wood or doing men's work.

Her father lived to the advanced age of 108 and one of her brothers lived to 99 1/2 years. She has

reared 11 children, all living, the youngest being 48 years, and had been married over 50 years

when her husband (John Edward) died. She is proud of her large family, there being also 50

grand-children, 26 great grand-children, 10 great great grand-children and three great great great

grand-children.This is probably a record for Australia.

Mrs Fitzgerald said there were too many small families at the present day, and couples should

have at least six children. She said that if God willed that more children be born, He would see

that their mouths were filled if the parents were willing to work from them. One of her sisters had

15 children, and one of her sons had eleven, and one of her brothers ten.

She was amazed at the number of divorces in recent years, such rifts in married life being

practically unheard of in "her younger days". People certainly had "tiffs", but they soon forgot

them, she added. If there was not so much sport and leisure time she thought married couples

would get along better with each other.

Mrs Fitzgerald came from England to Australia in 1849, when she was only three years old, going

with her parents to farms in Cootamundra, Gundagai, Bowral and Mittagong. She is a distant

relation to Don Bradman, and was in Bowral during the severe floods when Hordern's dam burst.

Her home was completely flooded out. During a short visit to Bathurst she had an interesting

experience with Gardiner, leader of one of the many bushranging gangs at that time. She was

dancing with him in an old shack during a social function, and it was not until she felt guns near

his side that she realised who he was. She was scared "stiff" and ran. Mrs Fitzgerald is still hale

and harty and hopes to reach the century. On present indications she might even outdo her

father.

DEATH OF OLD PIONEER

Mrs Eliza Fitzgerald of Gloucester Road, Hurstville, died on the 9th inst., aged 92 years. A family

of  11 sons and daughters survive. The deceased was one of the State's oldest pioneers and

could  relate many interesting stories of "life outback", many years ago. At her wedding

reception in Gundagai in 1867, Gardiner, the bushranger, and his gang entered the hall and

demanded to dance with the bride. They left afterwards without further trouble. The internment

took place in the Church of England portion of Woronora Cemetery last Friday.

Note: more credence could be placed on the personal interview on Eliza's 90th birthday regarding

the contact with Gardiner. Eliza married John Edward Fitzgerald at Hartley, Bathurst Diocese in

1863.
