"GOSSIP"
Matt Smith celebrated his
90th birthday yesterday with a very large afternoon tea at
Uralba Hostel. Many members
of Matt's extended family were present to see him cut
the cake and wish this
popular personality many happy returns. His fellow residents
of Uralba joined in the party
with four generations of the family gathering for the big
occasion. Matt, of course,
became a great-grandfather of the year earlier this week
with the dramatic birth of his
latest grandchild, Jock Andrew Smith.

DEATH OF MATT
SMITH
A man held in the deepest
affection throughout the Gundagai community, Matthew
Arnold ("Matty") Smith died
in the Gundagai
Hospital on
Saturday.
Matty was 91 years of
age.
Matt was born at Gundagai on
29th June 1915.
He was the eldest child of
William and Emily Smith.
Matt married Vera Smart in
1935 at Gundagai.
They shared sixty years of
marriage before Vera died in 1996.
From this long and happy
marriage came nine children - Margaret Elphick, Kevin, Barbara Davie, Norma
Peterson, Jenny Hourn, Ian (deceased), Maria Bower, Ron and
Phillip.
He leaves 22 grandchildren,
27 great grandchildren and one great great
grandchild.
Matt was the brother of
Connie Young, Jean Ballard, Dallas, Rita Goodsall (all
deceased) and Fay
Holland.
He lived in the town of
Gundagai and at
Back Station Creek all his life.
He followed many rural
pursuits, and finished his working life as a truck driver on the
DMR after 22 years
service.
Matt enjoyed his sport as a
younger man, playing football and cricket with the Back
Station Creek
team.
He carried his love of rugby
league with him all his life.
He was the most dedicated of
supporters of the Gundagai Tigers.
Right to the end, almost
every conversation he shared with anyone at all would turn
to the fortunes of the Gundagai
team.
Matt was blessed with a
wonderful memory and a great sense of humour.
He was first and foremost a
family man, and he took a great deal of pride in his family
and their
achievements.
His was a life full of
love.
A man of quite personality,
Matt was a general favourite with everyone who knew
him.
Due to Matt's failing
health, he moved to Gundagai Hospital six weeks ago, after
spending seven years as a
resident of Uralba Hostel.
Matt's funeral will take
place on Wednesday.
A service at 12 noon in
St. John's Anglican Church will be followed by
interment in South
Gundagai Cemetery.
