Fatal Fall of a Licensed
Victualler
Yesterday afternoon an
inquest was held at the Duke of Clarence Tavern, Queen Street,
Portsea,
before the Deputy Coroner
(G. H. King. Esq.), on the body of Mr. Jacob Wratten, the landlord of
the house. The deceased who
was 57 years of age, was in the habit of rising early in the mornings
and lying down for rest in
the afternoons, going to the upper room to avoid the noise. That he did
on Wednesday afternoon, and
about five o'clock in the evening a noise was heard in the house.
Search was made in the
basement without result, to ascertain the cause, but an hour later, as Mrs.
Wratten was going to her
bed-room, she discovered her husband lying upton the centre landing
of the staircase. Not being
able to obtain any reply from him she called to her son-in-law (Henry
Hyde), and it was found
that the deceased was unconscious and apparently dead. On the arrival
of Dr. T. A. Colt he
pronounced life to be extinct, and he now deposed that he found a series of
contusions upon the front
part of the head. He attributed death to a probable fracture at the base
of the skull and laceration
of the brain, there not being any external evidence that the neck of the
deceased was broken. - The
Jury returned a verdict of accidental death, and awarded their fee to
the Portsea Nursery for
Children.
