From a list of deeds for which Everest covenanted
to produce, it appears that the field formed part of the
estate sold by Thomas
Studwell, yeoman and his wife Mary to Richard Honeysett,
yeoman and
William Honeysett, husbandman on 7 and 8 October 1799, mortgaged
back to
Studwell the following day and sold to Jesse Smith, yeoman and
John
Pursglove, farmer (William Gill, banker taking on the mortgage) on 12 and
13
May 1809. On 18 and 19 November 1830 Smith appears to have sold his
interest to Caleb Wratten, maltster and the mortgage to have been assigned
to Richard Salter, gent. Wratten charged his interest to Robert Watkins, esq
on 7 December 1830 and on 12 and 13 March 1832 Wratten and Watkins
conveyed an estate to Henry Salter, land surveyor, and Wratten and John
Mayo Pursglove entered a deed of composition with their creditors. James
Everest and his trustee George Harman, builder, purchased the estate from
Watkins on 23 and 24 March 1837 and the outstanding mortgage terms were
assigned by Watkins and Salter to Edgar Blaker of Lewes, gent; Watkins
gave a bond of indemnity against the claims for
the heirs of Judith Pocock.
The following day Everest mortgaged the property to Edward Blaker of
Brighton, grocer for £600
at 4%
(PAR399/25/1/1-4).

and Ann Oxhill. She was born 1830

Notes for David Nicholas
Wratten:
He married for the second
time to
his housekeeper Hannah Oxley when he was 72 and
produced
6 children. He died age 90
when his youngest child was 7.
David was a master
cooper. There was a famous sign over his
Cooper`s shop in Hailsham
East Sussex Which read :-
As other people have a sign,
I say -- just stop and look at mine!
Here, Wratten, cooper, Lives and makes
Ox bows, trug-baskets, and hay-rakes.
Sells shovels, both for flour and corn,
And shauls, and makes a good box
churn,
Ladles, dishes, spoons and skimmers,
Trenchers too, for use at dinners.
I make and mend both tub and cask,
And make `em strong, to make them last.
Here`s butter prints, and butter scales,
And butter boards, and milking pails,
N`on this my friends may safely rest--
In serving them I`ll do my best;
Then all that buy, I`ll use them well
Because I make my goods to sell.
David`s poem is reproduced
in "The Village Cooper" No. 28 in the Shire Album series.
